Do you remember the poem of the fourteen angels?
Some time ago I visited a monastery with church in Bavaria (Germany). I always visit this area as it has a magnificent surrounding with a beautiful small forrest and fields with wheat, mais and potatoes grown on it. You can make beautiful walks, listen to the birds and calm down after a stressful day. After the walk and enlighten a candle in the church I visited the small monastery shop. It is a lovely, tiny shop, with a lot of beautiful things. And there it was, a candle with a sentence on it about the fourteen angels …
When I saw this candle my memory started to work, it triggered something in my mind. I was wondering, what is with these 14 angels? I knew it was something nice but did not know it immediately. It kept me busy. It had something to do with my childhood. I decided to ask my mom if she knew the poem. Yes of course she said, I always told you this poem when you went to bed! How beautiful, how happy I was finding this sweet memory back by seeing this candle.
For all of you who also lost this memory, the poem of the fourteen angels:
In the evening, when I go to sleep,
Fourteen angels watch over me:
Two at my head,
Two at my feet,
Two on my right,
Two on my left,
Two cover me up,
Two awaken me,
Two, point the way
to paradise in heaven!

Abends, wenn ich schlafen geh’,
vierzehn Engel um mich stehn:
zwei zu meinem Haupte,
zwei zu meinen Füßen,
zwei zu meiner Rechten,
zwei zu meiner Linken,
zwei die mich decken,
zwei, die mich wecken,
zwei, die mich weisen
zu Himmels Paradeisen!

‘s Avonds als ik slapen ga
volgen veertien engeltjes mij na:
twee aan mijn hoofd eind,
twee aan mij voeten eind,
twee aan mijn linkerzij,
twee aan mijn rechterzij,
twee die mij dekken,
twee die mij wekken,
twee die mij wijzen
naar hemelse paradijzen!
